THE YALTA CONFERENCE
  • Meeting near the end of WWII - big 3 meet to discuss post war Europe
  • Germany will be divided, controlled by the Allies
  • Liberated Eastern European countries will have new elections
  • United Nations will be formed
  • USSR is given great influence over Eastern Europe, and new government must be "Soviet freindly"
  • the roots of the Cold War are established

THE UNITED NATIONS
  • Created for international relations and peace
  • Their job is to be a watchdog on world relations
  • If countries are going to war, the UN is there to discuss other possibilities or agreements
  • All started after WWII when 26 nation pledged to fight against the Axis
  • The UN charter also says that the UN can not get involved with any domestic issue
  • A part of the UN is the International Justice Court which puts war criminals on trial
  • The security council is in charge of maintaining and securing peace

  • A policy created in response to Communism
  • This is created to stop Communist countries from expanding and spreading their influence of culture into other countries

THE TRUMAN DOCTRINE (Video available-

  • This prevented the spreading of Communism
  • This was the ground work for the marshall plan
  • This gave 400 million dollars to countries who were in need of this money to prevent the country from becoming Communist
  • Those two countries were Turkey and Greece
  • Truman believed that the Soviet Union should fund the poor Communist countries and the United States should help the non-Communist countries
THE MARSHALL PLAN (Video available-

  • This plan was proposed to keep Britain and France from falling the influence of Communist Soviet Union
  • Countries were vulnerable to the Soviet Union after six years of war devastating to their economies
  • The plan was an additive to the first plan which was the Truman Doctrine to use $400 million to help out Turkey and Greece
  • Marshall plan was to have Europe carve out and make their own financial plan with the help of the United States
  • Many opposed it because of the want to stay isolated, but it passed 69 to 17 in the Senate and 329-74 in the House

THE BERLIN BLOCKADE AND AIRLIFT (Video available

  • Berlin divided
  • Democratic governments in the west, Russians in the east.
  • In response to the west introducing a new German currency, Stalin began a land blockade of Berlin.
  • Western powers flew supplies in to Berlin via airplane, hence, "The Berlin Airlift"
NATO AND THE WARSAW PACT
  • US, Canada, and twenty other European nations form the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to form an alliance of Democratic powers
  • In response, the Soviets and their eastern satelites form the Warsaw Pact, the equivallent of NATO

THE RED SCARE, THE ROSENBERGS, AND HUAC (Video available- username mtaft, password usm)
  • During the cold war, hysteria grew concerning Comunists and Comunist sympathizers. This was called the "Red Scare"
  • Americans were afraid that anyone with the slightest tie to Russia or Comunism was a spy for the Soviets
  • This led to many false accusations, such as the case of the Rosenburgs, who were members of the American Comunist Party, they were conivcted of spying and passing nuclear secrets to the Russians, they were executed in 1953
  • HUAC was the group tasked with rooting out "un-American" people. In reality, it ruined the careers of countless film makers, actors, and directors.
COMMUNISM IN CHINA* After WWII, China's Nationalist government began losing power
  • In the late 1940's Mao Zedong led a Communist rebelion
  • In 1949, he gained power in China
  • Americans were furios and ended up blaming John Service, who had been one of the most vocal in warning the US of a coming rebelion in China

  • After the war, both the US and the Soviets captured V-2 rockets for models of space rockets
